Information
Producer interest in the Voluntary Scrapie Flock Certification Program has increased dramatically since April 2007, at which time access to the US market was renewed. Currently, Canadian producers are permitted to import sheep and goats from the US, however, Canadian producers are not yet permitted to export sheep and goats to the US. To import female sheep and goats (as well as embryos) from the US, the importing Canadian producer must be enrolled on the Voluntary Scrapie Flock Certification Program. The exporting American producer must be enrolled on the US National Certification Program. To import males/ semen, neither the Canadian or the American producer needs to be enrolled on the national certification program. Scrapie Canada has seen an increase in interest in the program due to this market access.
Initially, the program received funding to accept 60 sheep producers and 10 goat producers nationwide. Once these subsidized positions are filled, the program will continue to accept producers, however, an annual enrollment fee will be put into place. Producers enrolling on the program will be responsible for covering this fee, which is currently $150/ year. To date, all subsidized positions for goats producers have been filled, therefore any goat producers wanting to enroll on the progrm now will be charged $150/ year. To date, there are a handful of subsidized positions left for sheep producers.
Funding for the Voluntary Scrapie Flock Certification Program will be available until March 31, 2009.
